Aaron & Mike Weiss: Me Without You

I photographed Aaron & Mike Weiss from the Philadelphia band Me Without You for Heeb Magazine's Heeb 100.  We spent 5 hours shooting!  First at my new studio space and then we cooled off with Penny at the Wissahicken.

Pine Barrons

camping in the pine barons this week. cris was scarred of what was living in the black water and the unending pine forrest, but we went swimming anyway and slept safely and soundly in the back of his pick up suited with an air mattress and screen windows, safe from the jersey devil.

Real Love

My summer jam!

Heat Wave @ Vintage Connection

Heather, the owner of Vintage Connection on 9th and Bainbridge, had a little summer soiree at her shop last Friday.  Esther K. styled the models who stood outside blowing bubbles, John's Water Ice donated some refreshing treats and Rad Summer spun some great new wave classics, it made my night when he played Soul For Real "Candy Rain"!

beaver scratch fever!

My beautiful gypsy queen friend Julia Colavita did a performance art piece at her studio as a part of Brooykln Open Studios.  She is an incredible artist, you can see her work on her site www.juliacolavita.com.  She is also an active member of Michael Allen's Draw-A-Thon, also worth a mention www.michaelalanart.com/drawathon.  I spent the weekend in NYC with Julia, I love spending time with her and just basking in her creative energy, we laughed all weekend, ate delicious food, road our bikes over the brooklyn bridge and all around the city, did yoga in the park and she wore her flower crown everywhere we went along with her big black stomping boots!

i like la!

I just got back from a trip to the West Coast.  I went out to see the Red Lands Bike Classic that my brother raced in (sorry no pics) and visited my friend Julia in Los Angeles.  It was my first time in LA and Julia was a spectacular host!  We did not get stuck in traffic once and we spent most of our time outside taking little hikes or exploring the LA arboretum.  These pictures are from a day hike we took to Deep Creek Hot Springs about two hours outside of Los Angeles.  It was a small hike through the dessert along the ridges of dunes and down to the river, above which were carved out some small hot spring pools.  We tried our hardest to not get lost in the dessert and to not be too prude about getting naked with all the old hippies.  It was an amazing day! Although I can understand why people complain about LA, I loved Julia's side of it.  Check out Julia's gallery: www.workspace2601.com

Film vs. Digital

Here are some images from a shoot I did over the weekend that I shot in both film as well as digital.  Recently, I have been missing the quality and format of film- its really hard to put my finger on it really.  As the quality of digital improves and we are so inundated with digital we are getting further away from the distinction.  Compared to film, digital is hyper-sharp and encourages hyper-real trends through highpass and other sharpening filters.   Film has less information in a way, it is a little fuzzier, a little more pixelated, the darks are a little deeper, a little richer.  I also find the format of my digital SLR constricting.  Like a 35mm camera the format is somewhat awkward and doesn't translate to print and portfolio without cropping the image.  Ebay is a graveyard for cameras that you could expect to pay $3,000 not even 5 years ago no going for around $300.  So I think I might begin my ebay hunt for an unreasonably cheap 6x4.5!

So which are film and which are digital, can you tell?!

Urban

I was really excited to work with this model at Urban, at only 15 she is really striking!

Urban

This shoot was for Urban Outfitter's "Closet Project".  Matt and Katie both work at the Navy Yard, Urban Outfitter's corporate head-corders.  And they both really like shoes!
